Tikkun Olam project - Crochet Sleeping Mats

I love this idea for a "pay it forward" project. This project reuses plastic bags that are made into a sleeping mat for the homeless. My mother and her friends at Country Meadows in Bridgeville, PA work together to make these mats for the homeless.
They collect plastic bags from relatives and friends. Then they each do what they are capable of doing. Some cut the bags into strips, another makes takes the strip and makes into ball. Another person will crochet the mat. They take a lot of pride in making these mats and asks family members and friends to bring in different colored bags. They want to make not only a useful mat but a beautiful one. Here is a how to video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiUC0iDQtkA

Pictured is my Mom and her friend Cecelia with one of the many mats they made together.
Kudos to Mom and her friends for "tikkun olam" (repairing the world) with one good deed at a time!

Jewelry - Vintage Pendant

This pendant was made with my Grandmother's jewelry. It was an earring that I made into a pendant.

Insecticide Spray

I am still making lotions and potions with all of the essential oils I bought. The insect repellent (blog post 7/1/13) worked for about fifteen minutes before the mosquitoes decided the spray tasted like a marinade and NOT a repellent! The deodorant (blog post 7/3/13) worked but I would not recommend traveling with it. It was a melted mess when I arrived at our destination. I will make more and use it only in my home. My next experiment is a homemade insecticide spray. I adapted this one so my husband can use it on his garden. Insecticide Spray   1/2 head of garlic (you do not need to peel them) 1/2 T of pepper flakes 1/2 cup water   Process in a blender until smooth then pout mixture through a sieve to remove chunks of garlic or pepper flakes. This is your "base."   Pour your base mixture into a spray bottle. Add 4 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of Jojoba oil. Screw on top and shake.
